Firefighters were dispatched to an Aspinwall Road home shortly after 9 a.m. on Thursday, April 4, when a family made an emergency call. Two adults - the children were at school - were able to get out of the house safely with their dogs and a pet snake, Red Hook Fire Company spokesman Jeff Levine said.
The fire was knocked down within 15 minutes, but the basement sustained fire damage and parts of the home suffered smoke damage, leaving the home inhabitable. The American Red Cross is assisting the family to find temporary housing.
No injuries were reported. Fifteen firefighters remained at the scene for several hours until the overhaul and cleanup efforts were complete. The fire is under investigation, and the Dutchess County Fire Investigation has not released an official cause.
Red Hook Fire Chief Steve Fell said “it was a great job by the initial attack team to be able to knock down the fire quickly and contain it to the basement.”
